Yes, I could see what life would be like, along those lines. [An ominous low chord. Then a pause.] It was bad news. I'd be giving up a whole lot of . . . who I am!

OLIVIA: And? Who's that?

ELEANOR (to herself): Yeah. Who's that?

MURPHY: Tell 'em. Jack. Go on.

Jack's on the spot now. He doesn't really want to hurt Eleanor...But he's got to assert himself. So, like a lot of males who are pushed a bit, he overdoes it, with this song:

[Click here to hear the start of Tree Trunk Traction]

Well, I'm prowlin' round the yard,
 And I'm a-huntin' this and I'm a-stalkin' that,
Like the king of the jungle, not no pussy cat--
But then some robin redbreast heads up a tree,

And sits there laughin', lookin' down at me . .
I can't get no Tree Trunk Traction!
 I can't get no
Tree Trunk Traction !

'Cause I tried  (Oh, I tried)
And I tried     (What a trip)
But I slip       (Lose my grip)
  And I slide    (What a ride!) . . .

  I can't get no --
  Meow, wow, wow! I'm slippin'
now!

At the end, a quiet country-music vamp starts. Eleanor speaks over it to the audience, country-singer style (warm-hearted, confessional; like Loretta Lynn). She says that certainly you give some things up when you settle down...but there are rewards too...and she adds:

ELEANOR: Somehow it's just natural to have one home, one fireside --

JACK [From the shadows behind her]: Natural for some, maybe.

ELEANOR [Pointedly] -- and one roof you sleep under. I think that's the way it's supposed to be.
