OLIVIA: You're making it
pretty obvious, honey. Still think he's gonna let you
down?
ELEANOR slowly looks at
Jack, who's mesmerized by Desiree.
OLIVIA: Yeah, I get the
picture. Well, I suppose I should tell you I don't know what he sees
in her. [Glances at Desiree, who's executing a spectacular
split] But I'm afraid I do.
ELEANOR: It's not just
that. Now it's Murphy, too. Ever since he hit town, he's been
filling Jack's head with stories about life on the road. I think
Jack's really bought it this time. Soon they'll be off for parts
unknown...and maybe for good...
OLIVIA: Yeah, Murphy is a
very persuasive personality. But let me see what I can
do.
[Olivia sidles over to
Jack.]
OLIVIA: Jack, you are one
handsome fellow. Are you going to spend your whole life frustrating
and irritating dozens of females? Why don't you settle down with
one, and frustrate and irritate her?
[Jack smiles and
shrugs.]
OLIVIA: Ah c'mon. You've
spent years stringing Eleanor along. Last spring you promised to
move in with her by summer's end -- she told me -- and now the
leaves are falling...And you're heading out of town?
JACK: What makes it your
business?
OLIVIA: Because I've been
around the block once or twice...
DESIREE [She's moved
closer to eavesdrop, while still exercising]: Gee. Who'd have
suspected it?
OLIVIA: And the grass isn't
really greener than in your own backyard...
DESIREE [Suddenly
switching to leg lifts, as though avoiding something on the
ground]: Depends on what the dogs have been doing, doesn't
it?
OLIVIA [To Desiree]:
Would you please keep out of this?
JACK: She makes as much
sense as you do, thanks.
DESIREE: I just hate to see
somebody out of circulation before he's been [twisting her
torso] around the world.
JACK: She's got a point,
Olivia. I don't want to let Eleanor down; but i'm not ready to nap
by the fire.
RANDOLPH: If I might put my
two cents in:.The advantages of a regular routine can be a lot more
fulfilling than you seem prepared to believe.
JACK: Well, I ran away from all that
when I was just a kitten. I'll tell you something. [Facing
front] I had a dream the other night that I HAD settled down.
And the first thing they did, they trimmed my claws. [A high
guitar note is heard, bent and held long, like a bit of a
scream.]
